TMS is a non-invasive treatment for Depression that actually works. Highly-effective. Covered by insurance.
TMS has been shown to significantly improve symptoms of depression in about 3 out 4 patients.
TMS has been FDA-approved since 2008 and is now covered by Medicare and all major insurers
TMS is typically performed at a psychiatrist's office and is widely available.
Depression is caused by a lack of sufficient activity in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, essentially the front left part of your brain. When this area is working properly, the entire brain lights up, creating an improved mood, working memory, and selective attention.
Improved Mood
TMS for Depression activates your mood center and the stimulation of this area over time improves this area.
Better Focus & Memory
This area of the brain is in charge of functions such as your focus, working memory, and selective attention.
Long-term Improvement
TMS has been proven to be incredibly durable, with results lasting usually 1-2 years.
The TMS process is designed to make long-lasting changes in your brain and the doctor and staff are there to walk you through every step of the way.
A psychiatrist will determine if TMS is right for you and then the staff will send an authorization to insurance for approval.
Your doctor will set everything up on your first visit. Sessions are no more than 30-minutes and you can drive to and from appointments.
Treatments are Monday-Friday for 6 weeks, followed by a 3-week taper. Patients usually feel results after about 20 sessions.
Most insurance companies are looking for about 2 or more antidepressants that didn't work because of either side-effects or a lack-of-effect.
Insurance companies also approve patients who have tried at least 6-8 weeks of therapy but still suffer from depression.
If you've tried medication and therapy and you still have depression which psychiatrists call "treatment-resistant" and TMS is the best option.
These are the most common questions about TMS
Most TMS patients experience minimal to no side effects, but some do report mild headaches or tingling sensations in the jaw, face, or scalp. These side effects generally subside within a couple of weeks and most patients find them mild and tolerable enough to complete their treatment without interruption.
TMS for depression is covered by Medicare, Tricare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, CIGNA, Anthem, United Healthcare, Baylor Scott & White, and pretty much every private insurance plan. TMS for OCD is currently covered by BCBS and CIGNA. TMS is not covered by most medicaid plans.
This depends on your benefits which our staff is happy to do before you schedule your first visit. They typically cover 80-100% of the total cost of treatment.
Because TMS uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate the brain, it is not a one-and-done procedure. It requires regular stimulation on a consistent basis to encourage the brain to start incorporating these changes on their own. Studies show that the patients who don't improve in the first 4 weeks have a 63% remission rate if they continue treatment.
TMS is FDA-approved to treat depression, anxious depression, OCD, & smoking addiction. Insurance typically only approves TMS for depression and OCD currently.
